If you are using the Device-Mapper Multipath feature of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 and are seeing "multipath: error getting device" error messages in your system log it could cause ASM to shut down if you are using ASMlib with multipathing.

In the ASM alert log - ASMlib will show that it cannot open the devices -
ERROR: kfkOsmIdent:asm_open(): asm_erc:1 msg:Operation not permitted pid:22947
ORA-15186: ASMLIB error function = [kfkOsmIdent:asm_open], error = [1], mesg = [Operation not permitted]

The ASM alert log with also report since ASMlib couldn't open the device that ASM cannot mount the diskgroup:
ORA-15063: ASM discovered an insufficient number of disks for diskgroup "DGROUP2"
ORA-15080: synchronous I/O operation to a disk failed
