ASM UPGRADE to 11.2 WITH ASMCA FAILED ON ORA-1507 (Doc ID 971500.1)

CRS and ASM upgrade to 11.2 from 2 node RAC
The ASM upgrade with ASMCA failed on ORA-1507: database not mounted

ASMCA was not able to verify the existing 10g ASM instances.

Tried unsetting all Oracle related environment variables. not working.
Made sure the nodes were pinned. not working.
Tried applying <Patch 8288940>. not working.
