This document is intended to guide customers planning on using Oracle Clusterware with OCFS2 on Linux platform.


OCFS2 is supported with Oracle Clusterware to be used as a shared disk for storing OCR, Voting Disk, datafiles and other file types.

The intent of this document is to dissuade customers from using an OCFS2 mount point for the Oracle Clusterware binaries (the grid infrastructure binaries with Oracle Database 11g Release 2). Technically you can have your ORACLE_HOME for Oracle Clusterware in an OCFS2 file system, however in certain types of heartbeat failures this can cause node evictions where OCFS2 may bring down one node and Oracle Clusterware can bring down the other node causing complete outage for a 2-node cluster. This is not a OCFS2 specific issue but a generic issue with any cluster file system. This restriction does not apply to the database home. This is specific to the grid_home introduced with Oracle Database 11g Release 2. For Pre-11.2 installations where the Oracle Clusterware home and ASM home are separate, the restriction does not apply to ASM home. For 11g Release 2 installations, ASM and Oracle Clusterware are combined into a single Oracle Home referred to as the grid home.

Best Practice is to use a local file system for the grid home (binaries for Oracle Clusterware and Automatic Storage Management. This is specifically mentioned in the 11.2, the installation guide

Note: Placing Oracle grid infrastructure for a cluster binaries on a cluster file system is not supported
