Error 'The external bank account already exists' When Assign The Same Bank Account To Another Party

There are parties who use the same bank account, even though they are seperate legal entities.
Attempting to enter the bank account into the second party in R12 Customers screen and receive the following error:
The external bank account already exists.
Responsibility: Receivables Manager
Navigation: Customers > Customers > Query a Customer
Go To: Account Details
Select Bank Account Tab
Enter a Bank Account and Save
Query another customer and enter the same bank account and the error occurs
