R12: AP: Upgrading R11i Employee Records with Site Codes Other than HOME or OFFICE

In many cases, Oracle customers had employees with site codes other than HOME or OFFICE on their pre-R12 instance(s). After upgrading to R12, they often want to know:
1) is it OK to update these sites to HOME or OFFICE via SQL?
2) how can they be sure everything is in sync with HRMS tables?
