Oracle Install Base Is Timing Out On Search Instance By Serial Number

When searching for an Item Instance with an alphanumeric Serial Number eg., AAA1234, the search runs for a long time then times out. However, if the query is done by Instance Number for the same Serial Number, OR if the query is done by a numeric Serial Number eg., 112233, the search returns results quickly.
Should be able to query by an alphanumeric Serial Number without timing out
Steps to Reproduce
The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:
1. Navigation: Oracle Installed Base User (R12 - Orale Installed Base Agent User) >> Item Instance >> Item Instances
2. Enter an alphanumeric Serial Number in the 'Serial Number' field on the Instance Search Page
3. Observe that the search goes on for a long time and eventually times out
