Goal

How can I do a truncate in the product value attribute and just look at the first five digits?

Our product attribute is equal to item number, e.g itm55-1234, itm55-1456, itm55334567-1212 etc.
If the first five digits match, regardless the values for the last four digits, I want to allow a discount.
How can I do a truncate in the product value attribute and just look at the first five digits?
For example: product attribute value = itm55
