How Does SubLedger Accounting Choose Posting Period in GL in R12?

Oracle Assets - Version 12.0.1 and laterInformation in this document applies to any platform.
Goal
Your Assets calendar is not in synch with your General Ledger (GL) calendar. In 11i, posting was done based upon a match of period name, and thus, the lack of synchronicity did not cause items to post to different periods. However, in R12, you are finding that items post to different periods. Why is that?
There are two components to this:
1) Assets picks the event date that is submitted to SubLedger Accounting when the xla_event record is created as part of the creation of the transaction in Assets. The event_date will be:
-- sysdate if that falls within the open period in Assets
OR
-- if the transaction date is EARLIER than the open period, as most often occurs when the user backdates a transaction, the event date will be the first date of the open period
OR
-- if the sysdate is beyond the open period AND the transaction date falls within the open period, the last date of the period will be used
2) Once the event_date has been supplied to xla_events, SubLedger Accounting uses that to map to the GL periods. Thus if the 31st of January falls in January in Assets, but February in GL, the event will pick February to post to in GL.
Menu paths to check these calendars:
In Assets, use Setup -- Asset System -- Calendars.
In General Ledger, use Setup -- Financials -- Calendars -- Accounting.
