UPK: Publishing Error: Object Reference Not Set to An Instance of an Object Version 12.1.0.1. (Doc ID 2056069.1)

Symptoms

Customer upgraded to from UPK 11.1.0.2 to version 12.1.0.1.

When publishing existing content, publishing fails with the error:  "Object reference not set to an instance of an object"

Publishing Activity log displays the following error:
