Assets With The Same Serial Number Cant Be Updated

When migrating from 11i to R12 the assets were automatically assigned a serial number as part of the data migration. A number of assets were assigned the same serial number, because of this key aspects of the Asset like Criticality cannot be updated. There is a lot of history with these assets and creating new assets to replace them is not an option.  What can be done to fix this issue so assets can edited as needed.
