After upgrading E-Business Suite to the 12.1.0.2 database (from 11.2.0.4), after the upgrade users reported forms failed to launch due to error 'ORA-28040: No matching authentication protocol'.
To resolve the ORA-28040 errors <Note 2125856.1> was followed as a temporary workaround.
Checking the log file (application.log) the following error messages appear:

oracle.apps.fnd.common.AppsException: java.sql.SQLException: Protocol violation at oracle.apps.fnd.security.AppsConnectionManager.makeGwyuidConn(AppsConnectionManager.java:966)
