Item Simple Search Is Slow, Not Working (Performance Issue, INDEX RANGE SCAN MTL_SYSTEM_ITEMS_B_N1)

Symptoms

When attempting to perform an item simple search, the process times out and the following error occurs.

ERROR
Failure of Web Server Bridge:
No backend server available for connection: timed out after 10 seconds or idempotent set to OFF or method not idempotent
The proxy did not receive a valid response in time.

WORKAROUND
Advanced search works fine.

STEPS
1. Navigate to Catalog>Item Simple Search
2. Enter the item code
* Process times out after around 7 minutes


BUSINESS IMPACT
The business users totally depend on it in deciding whether to create the new item or not.
It is on Production instance also and no available workarounds to avoid simple search.
Due to this issue, the simple search cannot be used so it is taking users longer to find items and perform their jobs.
