Applying Custom Data Formatting by Including the Mask in a Data Element of the Report is not Working as Expected (Doc ID 2469225.1)

Symptoms

After applying custom data formatting by selecting the Mask from a Data Element of a BI Publisher template, the resulting column's values are empty instead of having the custom formatting look like 'RR.MM.YY' or 'DD/MM/YY'. The behavior has been observed in reports output and BI Publisher Layout Editor as well.
