How do we Stagger PM Schedules without impacting existing forecast schedule?

User has a number of machines that they maintain. Each of these machines has a near identical PM schedule, meaning that the when a maintenance activity (for example, a quarterly inspection) happens, then 10 machines are all maintained at the same time.

The User would like to look at staggering out the dates so that there are fewer machines to maintain at one time. They would like to do this by staggering out the existing scheduled dates. However, in previous experiences with this, this has caused problems; from missing history to the inability to forecast work orders for extended periods.

Therefore we want to know the best way to achieve this?
