"File is not a Data File" When Attempting to Apply Vertex Monthly Update

Symptoms
When attempting to apply Vertex monthly tax update, following error occurs.
Example:
Enter Data Source: /xxx/appl/pay/12.0.0/vendor/quantum/data
Enter the path to the update file: /xxx/appl/pay/12.0.0/vendor/quantum/
Updating database. Please wait. It may take a while...
Codebase Error Code: (-200)
Codebase Error Message: (File is not a Data File)
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:
- Download qfpt.dat from the Vertex website (https://community.vertexinc.com) and copy it on the server.
- Execute vprtmupd to install the monthly update and enter Data Source and path to update file as in the example above.
The error occurs when installing monthly update using concurrent program "Quantum Data Update Installer" as well. - Error occurs.
