Customer Merge Issue: How to Delete an Old Customer Pending Merge Request

Customer Merge errors with:
A request to merge account with account has already been submitted.
Please ensure that the request has completed before you reselect account XXXX.
In the customer merge form, Query by customer ID = XXXX and a pending "processing" entry with request ID = ZZZZ is returned. Normally the failed merge is simply resubmitted from here. However, if the resubmit the merge request does not process, How can the old Customer Pending Merge Request be removed?
