Workflow Does Not Send Mails Immediately: javax.mail.MessagingException

Symptoms
1) The Workflow Mailer randomly stops sending email notifications.
2) The notification Mailer log may show errors similar to the following:
->javax.mail.MessagingException: 421 4.4.2 Error: timeout exceeded
-> javax.mail.MessagingException: Can't send command to SMTP host;
nested exception is: java.net.SocketException: Broken pipe
-> javax.mail.MessagingException: [EOF]
The log file might also show that the same notifications that have failed, have been retried several times and may successfully be processed if the mailer service has been restarted.
