If eMail is flagged for Interaction, it is not synchronized

In Release 12.1.1, when attempting to flag the email for interaction and synchronization the following message is being displayed in the log file:
This user (email@example.com) is not the sender or a recipient. Interaction has not been recorded.
Users are expecting to be able to flag an email for Interaction and synchronize without encountering any error/warning messages.
The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:
1) Outlook 2007
2) Flag Email for Interaction
3) Click Sync
4) Warning is thrown in log file
5) email flagged for interaction is not synchronized.
