Why is it that Only One Open Period can be open for Asset Management?

Goal
As far as I know only one periods at the time can be open for AM? This is different for other submodules like AP and AR. Especially during year end process it can present a problem if e.g. during calendar months January and February the books are not ready to close for the precious year. If December is the open period in Assets, there is no possibility to continue the regular process for the new year. What is is the logic behind the different approaches for closing periods between Assets and other submodules?
Reason for asking is the fact that this may present PGS with a big challenge during year end process. And they want to know the reason behind.
