Unable to programmatically set a custom Resource field via Groovy

we have identified two related issues with the Resource object:

1. We are unable to use groovy to update a custom field on the Resource object. This is the groovy script that we are firing before Update into Database (ideally this would be changed to before Insert into Database):

setAttribute('UserReferenceName_c',Username)

Where, UserReferenceName_c is the new field we are setting with the value from the system field Username.

2. The system field User ID is not always set by the system:
We noticed that for some of the users that we created we do get the Username filled in, but for others no.
