Purpose

This document outlines Oracle's support policy for customers using ASMLib with Automatic Storage Management on Oracle Linux supported by Oracle.

What is ASMLib?

ASMLib is a support library for the Automatic Storage Management feature of Oracle Database 10g and later. Automatic Storage Management (ASM) simplifies database administration. It eliminates the need for the DBA to directly manage potentially thousands of Oracle database files, requiring only the management of groups of disks allocated to the Oracle Database. ASMLib allows an Oracle Database using ASM more efficient and capable access to the disk groups it is using.

For Oracle Linux 4, 5 and 6, Oracle provides ASMLib software and support for customers who have both a valid Oracle Database support license and a valid Oracle Linux support license.

Requirements for ASMLib Software Updates

To receive software updates for ASMLib, both the release of the Oracle Database in use and the version of Oracle Linux in use must be fully supported by Oracle. Specifically, the Oracle Database release must be covered under Premier support or Extended support as defined in the Oracle Lifetime Support Policy for Oracle Technology Products. Also, the Oracle Linux version must be covered under Premier support as defined in the Lifetime Support Policy: Coverage for Enterprise Linux and Oracle VM.

For example: As of April 2010, customers on Oracle Linux 4U8 that do not have an Extended Support license for database version 10.1 today, are no longer entitled to any new fixes to ASMlib even if they have a valid Sustaining Support database license. Although Oracle Linux 4U8 is still in the Premier Support lifecycle for Linux, the 10.1 database is currently only eligible for bug fixes under Extended Support.

Oracle Linux 4 and 5 x86, x86-64, Itanium

ASMLib software and updates are available to customers with Oracle Linux support from the Oracle Unbreakable Linux Network(ULN). Updates and bug fixes to ASMLib are provided for Linux kernels that are part of the latest supported release of Oracle Linux 4 and Oracle Linux 5 as listed on the http://linux.oracle.com/supported.html  document and for three update releases prior to that. For example, if the latest supported release of Oracle Linux is Oracle Linux 5, Update 6, then updates to ASMLib will be provided for Oracle Linux 5.2, Oracle Linux 5.3, Oracle Linux 5.4, Oracle Linux 5.5 and Oracle Linux 5.6 kernels.

Software Update Policy for ASMLib running on future releases of Oracle Linux

Oracle Linux 6 x86, x86_64

Oracle will continue to provide ASMLib software and updates for Oracle Linux 6 via the Unbreakable Linux Network(ULN) . For Oracle Linux 6 with the Red Hat Compatible Kernel (RHCK), Oracle provides the 64-bit kernel driver package 'kmod-oracleasm' in an rpm format. The Oracle ASMLib kernel driver is now included in the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) automatically.  No driver package needs to be installed when using UEK.  However, the oracleasm-support and oracleasmlib packages still need to be installed from ULN for both the UEK and the Red Hat Compatible Kernel.

To receive support for ASMLib, both the release of the Oracle Database in use and the version of Oracle  Linux in use must be fully supported by Oracle. Specifically, the Oracle Database release must be covered under Premier support or Extended support as defined in the Oracle Lifetime Support Policy for Oracle Technology Products and the Oracle Linux version must be supported under premier support as defined in the Lifetime Support Policy: Coverage for Oracle Enterprise Linux and Oracle VM

Oracle Linux 7 x86_64

ASMLib for Oracle Linux 7 is available from the Oracle Technology Network.

Oracle Linux 8 x86_64

ASMLib for Oracle Linux 8 is available here.
