lp: Unsupported document-format "text/plain"

The 'lp' command complains about 'Unsupported document-format "text/plain"' while printing plain text file:
# lp test
lp: Unsupported document-format "text/plain".
But 'lpstat' command shows the printer is working fine:
$ lpstat -t
scheduler is running
system default destination: HPLaserJet9040PCL6
device for HPLaserJet9040PCL6: socket://10.1.1.12:9100
device for second: lpd://10.1.1.1:515/binary_p1
device for test1: lpd://10.1.1.6:515/HPlaserJ
