After configuring sendmail to send out mail from a Linux server using smtp.xxxx.com as the relay, the logs indicate localhost is being used as the relay. Below is an entry in the /var/log/maillog:
Oct 30 16:14:04 hostname sendmail: r9UNE4dl018230: email@example.com, ctladdr=root (0/0), delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, pri=30005, relay=[127.0.0.1] [127.0.0.1], dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Connection refused by [127.0.0.1]
