Oracle Linux: How to move /usr and /var to Another Partition or Disk (Doc ID 2096119.1)

Last updated on JANUARY 11, 2023

Applies to:

Linux OS - Version Oracle Linux 5.0 and later
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - Version N/A and later
Linux x86-64
Linux x86

Goal

As part of security hardening it is mentioned in Oracle Tech Network :-

"Some simple steps can help protect data and the integrity of the installed Oracle Linux Operating System.

First, use separate disk partitions for operating system and user data (that is, separate partitions for /home, /tmp, /var/tmp, /oracle, and so on).

This strategy can prevent a "file system full" issue from impacting operations. Establishing disk quotas can also prevent a user from accidentally or intentionally filling up a file system."

Create a separate disk partition and migrate these existing partitions?
