Attempting to delete a LUN in the Oracle VM Manager yields OVMRU_002026E "Cannot use or delete physical disk: Y, it already contains a file system: [X]"

Symptoms
On Oracle VM and Oracle Private Cloud Appliance, when attempting to delete a LUN on an external storage server, the job created to delete the LUN on the storage fails with the following kind of error message :
OVMRU_002026E Cannot use or delete physical disk: SUN (5), it already contains a file system: [0004fb00000500007ab531267934bbc0]. [Wed Mar 02 09:29:48 CET 2016]
However, when using a command such as the following one on a VM Server where the external storage is visible :
# dd if=/dev/mapper/<entry> bs=1024 count=1000 | od -c
No information is printed from reading the raw device. So it appears that there is no file system present on the LUN.
