Sendmail Service fails with "daemon MTA-v6: problem creating SMTP socket" Error in /var/log/maillog (Doc ID 2139753.1)

Sending mail using mailx command fails.

Errors in /var/log/messages:

May 13 08:57:10 <hostname> sm-msp-queue[60332]: u4915XVM122697: to=root, delay=4+12:51:37, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, pri=9931519, relay=[], dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Connection refused by []

Sendmail service status shows:

# /etc/init.d/sendmail status
sendmail dead but subsys locked

/var/log/maillog shows the following error when we try to restart the sendmail service:

May 13 10:08:07 <hostname> sendmail[35176]: NOQUEUE: SYSERR(root): opendaemonsocket: daemon MTA-v6: cannot bind: Cannot assign requested address
May 13 10:08:07 <hostname> sendmail[35176]: daemon MTA-v6: problem creating SMTP socket
