Set CPU Pinning for VMs on Oracle VM 3.X (Doc ID 2213691.1)

Last updated on MARCH 15, 2024

Applies to:

Oracle VM - Version 3.0.2 and later
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - Version N/A and later
Private Cloud Appliance X5-2 Hardware - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Linux x86-64

Goal

On 3.4.1 and 3.4.2, CPU pinning with ovm_vmcontrol utility on running guest does not work. This is fixed in 3.4.3 on-wards.

When configuring CPU pinning for a running virtual machine with the ovm_vmcontrol command line script, the script returns a success message but output of command 'xm vcpu-list' displays unchanged values.
It means  the changes do not take effect on Oracle VM Server until the VM guest is stopped and started.
Stopping and Starting the guest machine is needed after executing ovm_vmcontrol utility.

This Document explains how we can set cpu pinning for VMs and avoid stop and start of the VM guest.

Quick note on OVM Utilities:

1. The Oracle VM 3 Utilities are a collection of command line scripts that allow you to perform a set of basic management tasks

2. The Oracle VM Utilities are available for download as a .zip file from My Oracle Support, search for patch ID 13602094. Please review the readme file available in the Patch for Oracle VM utilities versions and other details.

3. For more details on OVM utilities refer the documents and OVM administrator guide links available in the Reference section.
