An OL 6 / RHEL 6 Para-Virtualized Virtual Machine (PVM) Guest Fails To Boot After YUM Update (Doc ID 2261782.1)

Last updated on JULY 12, 2019

Applies to:

Private Cloud Appliance - Version 1.0.1 and later
Linux OS - Version Oracle Linux 6.5 to Oracle Linux 6.9 [Release OL6U5 to OL6U9]
Oracle VM - Version 3.0.1 and later
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - Version N/A and later
Linux x86-64

Symptoms

After updating a working PVM guest, the next reboot will hang.  The boot messages display:

No Kdump initial ramdisk found
rebuilding /boot/initrd/.xxx

Since RHEL 6.3 there is limited support for kdump on full-virt Xen DomU
This kdump marker may now be removed on supported configurations
See KCS solution 92943 for more details.
