(Doc ID 2318600.1)

Last updated on OCTOBER 18, 2017

Applies to:

Linux OS - Version Oracle Linux 6.0 to Oracle Linux 6.9 [Release OL6 to OL6U9]
Other UNIX

The server is experiencing unexpected reboots. Checking the core dump shows the PANIC is related to "general protection fault: 0000 [#1] SMP."

The server is an ORACLE SERVER X6 but at issue is the CPU type and firmware versions.

Further review of the core dump shows every CPU is in its idle loop when a general protection fault (GPF) triggered. A final clue is in the Call Traces stack trace shows [exception RIP: __ticket_spin_lock+9]

This issue has symptoms that can be possible related to a HW issue. But the cause can be related with microcode_ctl.
