Symptoms

 On a VMware virtual machine running an Oracle Linux guest, the following filesystem had found deleted or missing:

/boot and /etc were not found and had been deleted.

Further details are found in the /var/log/messages:

Jun 28 14:35:10 vmware-guestvm systemd-udevd[xxxx]: inotify_add_watch(x, /dev/dm-xx, xx) failed: No such file or directory
Jun 28 14:35:11 vmware-guestvm systemd-udevd[xxxx]: inotify_add_watch(x, /dev/dm-xx, xx) failed: No such file or directory
Jun 28 14:35:14 vmware-guestvm systemd-udevd[xxxx]: inotify_add_watch(x, /dev/dm-xx, xx) failed: No such file or directory
Jun 28 14:35:15 vmware-guestvm systemd-udevd[xxxx]: inotify_add_watch(x, /dev/dm-xx, xx) failed: No such file or directory
