Oracle Linux: Postfix Mail Client Connection To Relay Server Error "SASL authentication failed" (Doc ID 2456259.1)

Last updated on OCTOBER 10, 2018

Applies to:

Linux OS - Version Oracle Linux 5.1 to Oracle Linux 7.5 [Release OL5U1 to OL7U5]
Linux x86
Linux x86-64

Symptoms

The local host has been configured to use the Postfix mail transfer agent.  A relay server is used to perform the mail routing function.

  1. A username and password has been configured in the /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd file for credentials to the relay host:
    user@smtp.example.com  user@smtp.example.com:<password>
  2. The relay host is identified in the /etc/postfix/sender_relay file:

The SASL authentication error is the more important error here.  The meaning is that the local Postfix mail agent could not connect to the mail agent on the relay hosemail alay host.  Since the hosts could not successfully connect, no information was exchanged.  The second error explains the failure in terms of an email transfer.
