Oracle VM: Unable To Configure KDUMP For OVM 3.4 (Doc ID 2542321.1)

Last updated on MAY 26, 2021

Applies to:

Oracle VM - Version 3.4.1 and later
x86 64 bit

Symptoms

Configuring KDUMP on OVM server 3.4.3  does not  generate a memory dump when servers crash.  A manual dump using the SYSRQ feature creates the output directory but the VMCORE file is not produced.

The following error message can be observed on the console while the servers tries to create the vmcore:

prepare_bitmap2_buffer: Can't allocate memory for the 2nd bitmap's buffer. Cannot allocate memory

Changes

The /etc/kdump.conf file had been modified manually, introducing an inconsistency that prevented the VMCORE generation.
