OL7: csh Or tcsh User Logins Return "if: Expression Syntax" After Patching. (Doc ID 2579995.1)

Last updated on SEPTEMBER 12, 2019

Applies to:

Linux OS - Version Oracle Linux 7.2 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

After patching an OL7.x machine, for all users whose default shells are set to csh(1) or tcsh(1), they may see a syntax error "if: Expression Syntax" returned during normal logins or su(1) sessions.

In an example, a user called oracle has csh(1) as its default shell:

oracle:x:<uid>:<gid>::<user_home_directory>:/bin/csh

Running su(1) to change into oracle now returns:

# su - oracle
Last login: Wed Aug 21 10:28:17 EDT 2019 on pts/0
if: Expression Syntax.

This problem also affects cron(8) jobs run by the same user.

Changes

Patched this OL7.x machine via "yum update".
