Symptoms

After user tried to modify the group id of a group of an Oracle Linux 7.x server, received the following errors:

  groupmod -g <newGID> <group>
  groupmod: /etc/passwd.7097: Permission denied
  groupmod: cannot lock /etc/passwd; try again later.
