Oracle Linux 7 Server Running Chrony Gets The Following Alerts: "Consistency Check FAILED With NTP Server" (Doc ID 2616353.1)

Last updated on DECEMBER 24, 2019

Applies to:

Linux OS - Version Oracle Linux 7.0 and later
Linux x86-64

Symptoms

An Oracle Linux 7 server running the chronyd service experienced errors with time keeping and received the following alert messages about an NTP failure when trying to sync time against two local NTP servers:

[Info]: Consistency check FAILED
Checking NTP server on <IP_ADDRESS> FAILED
Checking NTP server on <IP_ADDRESS> FAILED

However both NTP servers are pingable from the Oracle Linux 7 server and the chrony is correctly configured to be a client of these NTP servers in /etc/chrony.conf.

Changes

The ntpd service provided by the ntp package was enabled, started and was running on the server when the chronyd service started to experience failures when trying to sync time or trying to restart.
