Things to Do When Btrfs Volume Blancing Failed to Start (Doc ID 2639542.1)

Symptoms

When btrfs volume was not managed properly, it could run out of space with data unbalanced, and sometimes attempting to start balance could fail with error.

# touch /path/to/btrfs/tmp.txt
touch: cannot touch ‘/path/to/btrfs/tmp.txt’: No space left on device

# btrfs balance start -dusage=5 /path/to/btrfs
ERROR: error during balancing '/path/to/btrfs': No space left on device
There may be more info in syslog - try dmesg | tail

# dmesg
BTRFS info (device sdc): 3 enospc errors during balance
