Last updated on MAY 21, 2021

Applies to:

Linux OS - Version Oracle Linux 7.8 with Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel [4.14.35] and later
Linux x86-64

Symptoms

Linux server has been configured with Windows Active Directory. Authentication works fine, but intermittently winbind looses connectivity with AD server. Users cannot login when this happens. To fix the issue, temporary work around is to restart winbind service.

The below error can be seen when this happens.

# wbinfo --ping-dc
could not obtain winbind interface details: WBC_ERR_WINBIND_NOT_AVAILABLE
could not obtain winbind domain name!
checking the NETLOGON for domain[] dc connection to "" failed
failed to call wbcPingDc: WBC_ERR_WINBIND_NOT_AVAILABLE

A success message looks like this.

# wbinfo --ping-dc
checking the NETLOGON for domain[domain] dc connection to "hostname.<domain.com>" succeeded
