Oracle Linux: Windows File Explorer Unable to Navigate Shares from Newly Migrated Oracle Linux 8 Samba server (Doc ID 2953449.1)

Last updated on JUNE 12, 2023

Applies to:

Linux OS - Version Oracle Linux 8.0 and later
Linux x86-64

Symptoms

An Oracle Linux 6 (OL6) system provides Samba shares to Microsoft Windows 10 clients.

The Samba configuration implements the force user option for all shares to ensure shared files are all owned by the same user.

The Samba file server is migrated to Oracle Linux 8 (OL8) via fresh installation, however, makes use of the original unmodified OL6 /etc/samba/smb.conf configuration file.

Using File Explorer, Windows clients can see the Samba shares listed, however are unable to navigate to or within them.

Removing the Samba force user option allows the Samba shares to be navigable once again.

Changes

The Oracle Linux 8 system uses the same unmodified Samba configuration file that was generated and used in Oracle Linux 6.
