Symptoms

An Oracle Linux (OL) system running as a VMware guest machine using NTP to synchronise it's system clock.
Despite a proper NTP client configuration, the system clock fails to reflect the correct system time.
Messages such as the following are reported to the system log (/var/log/messages):
