Last updated on OCTOBER 07, 2024

Applies to:

Linux OS - Version Oracle Linux 7.9 with Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel [5.4.17] and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

After attaching the disks to the VM, we can see the disk names can be /dev/vd(x) or /dev/sd(x). /dev/vd(x) are the paravirtualized disks and uses VirtIO interface while /dev/sd(x) are emulated fully virtualized disks and uses VirtIO-SCSI interface.

Detailed description between both of the interfaces is explained in the doc: Doc ID 2866968.1

We can change the interface from VirtIO to VirtIO-SCSI or vice versa of the existing disk without the data loss.
