Goal

This article describes how to manually convert VMware guest images for use with Oracle VM Server.

The procedure is solely intended for Oracle VM versions 2.x. Although the procedure works for version 2.x (and likely beyond), the V2V feature provided from Oracle VM 2.1.2 automatically converts VMware images.

Requirements:

The terms image, guest and virtual machine are used synonymously throughout the article.

 1. Select an appropriate VMware guest to convert
 2. Convert VMware image to a single disk
 3. Copy single VMware disk to Oracle VM Server
 4. Convert VMware single disk to raw image using qemu-img
 5. Create the Virtual Machine configuration file
 6. Start the newly converted Virtual Machine
 7. Import converted VMware image into Oracle VM Manager (optional but recommended)
