Last updated on FEBRUARY 02, 2019

Applies to:

Linux OS - Version 2.6 to 2.6.21
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - Version N/A and later
Linux x86-64
Linux x86
Reviewed for currency 3-Jul-2017

Symptoms

In this specific instance, a script that runs every 30 seconds occasionally fails with segmentation fault.  Failure occurred approximately once in 1200 times (i.e about once every 10 hours).

Dynamically-linked application can also exhibit this behavior.  To determine if your application is potentially vulnerable to this issue, use the command:

$ /usr/bin/file /bin/bash | /bin/fgrep shared
/bin/bash: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, AMD x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.6.9, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.9, stripped

If the output includes the phrase "dynamically linked", your application may experience this issue.
