Applies to:

Linux OS - Version Oracle Linux 4.6 to Oracle Linux 5.2 [Release OL4U6 to OL5U2]
Oracle VM - Version 2.1 to 2.1.1 [Release OVM21 to OVM211]
Linux x86-64
Linux x86
Oracle VM - Version: 2.1 to 2.1.1

Goal

In a cluster environment, an incident on one host can produce secondary effects on other cluster nodes.  The Linux kernel typically logs notices to the file /var/log/messages on each host.  Manually scanning these files searching for related entries can be a daunting task.

This note describes the vlmsort script which can merge multiple /var/log/messages files into a more-easily comprehended single file.  The log entries are grouped by time and sorted by host name.
