Oracle VM: Overcommitting of Guest VM Memory (Doc ID 735796.1)

Last updated on JANUARY 30, 2022

Applies to:

Oracle VM - Version 2.1 to 2.2.2 [Release OVM21 to OVM222]
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - Version N/A and later
Linux x86

Symptoms

Note: Memory overcommit is not available in OVM 3.x.

Oracle VM does not currently support the overcommitting of guest Virtual Machine (VM) memory.
Only available physical memory on Oracle VM Servers (dom0) can be allocated to guests (domU).

Using Oracle VM Manager, for example, it is possible to increase the memory configuration of guest VMs to have more memory than is physically available on Oracle VM Servers. Doing so, however, may give the false impression that a guest may be running with more memory than it really is.

Changes

The memory configuration of one or more running guest VMs was dynamically increased.
