Symptoms

The web server intermittently runs out of memory. A "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError" is logged to PIA_weblogic.log.  Example:

####<Sep 12, 2011 4:34:12 PM CDT> <Error> <HTTP> <up02406> <myserver> <[ACTIVE] ExecuteThread: '115' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'> <> <> <> <1315863252697> <BEA-101017> <[ServletContext@378782047[app:erm_ermEar module:erm path:/erm spec-version:2.5]] Root cause of ServletException.
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: allocLargeObjectOrArray: [B, size 166616

The issue occurs when there is a large number of sessions on the PIA (which can be observed by viewing sessions from WebLogic console as described in document 661808.1).  There are no other signs of problems on the web server, such as stuck threads.
