Goal
When working with EDI, you may make use of a VAN Service Provider to transform and translate inbound and outbound EDI messages with trading partners.
For outbound messages from PeopleSoft, the VAN transforms the flat files into proper EDI files (X12, ODETTE and EDIFACT). For incoming messages, the VAN transforms the EDI files into flat files following the PeopleSoft File Layouts.
Part of the translation service the VAN provides is often dependent on code lists which are a cross reference of the PeopleSoft data (Customer code, Product code, etc.) and of the trading partners. If a Product has been created in PeopleSoft with a Product ID A, that same Product could be called B for trading partner 1 and C for trading partner 2. So the VAN replaces the Product ID A in the outbound messages from PeopleSoft for that Product ID and replaces it with the Product of the trading partner to whom the messages should go to.
Also, the transformation and translation do not have to be done by the VAN. You could use the VAN to handle the connections with your trading partners only and take care of the transformation and translation in-house by another third-party software.
But what if you would like to use PeopleSoft instead of that third-party software. Does PeopleSoft provide any facilities to perform the transformations and translations on EDI files?
