A "stand off" can occur with some versions of IE8 when the workstation's HTTP KeepAliveTimeout is higher than that of the web, or proxy, server. The symptom that is experienced by the end user is a "spinning wheel," or wait cursor. The problem appears to be unique to later versions of IE8.
One workaround to this problem is to configure the system such that the HTTP KeepAliveTimeout of the browser is slightly lower than that of the server.
