E-IB: Troubleshooting "Cannot establish HTTP connection (158,2842)" Error on Accessing a URL via Integration Gateway (Doc ID 1518896.1)

Purpose

Guidance on troubleshooting the Integration Broker gateway error "Cannot establish HTTP connection (158,2842)" that may occur in a number of scenarios, including:

  1. In IB node definition for an external (non-PIA) remote node, tab Connectors, using HTTPTARGET connector, on pressing Ping Node button.
  2. In Consume Web Service Wizard, on trying to consume an external web service via option WSDL URL and pressing next step.
  3. In Provide Web Service Wizard, trying to generate WSDL for a selected set of service sperations.
  4. n Portal WSRP Consumption Wizard, trying to consume an external WSRP.

Note: All of the scenarios involve an attempt to use an Integration Broker gateway to reach out to an http or https based URL.

Exact Error Message Variants:

Cannot establish HTTP connection (158,2842)

      ...or it may be an extended form of the same error, as follows:

Cannot establish HTTP connection (158,2842)

Can be caused by any of the following:
1. Cannot load certificates due to keystore password (not encrypted).
2. Keystore file not found.
3. Proxy server not configured.

In addition, the PIA web server logs would usually show at that time an additional error message, for example like the following (though can be a different one):

java.io.IOException: Keystore was tampered with, or password was incorrect

This document outlines the background and provides detailed steps to troubleshoot the above error when it happens on any of possible scenarios.
