While configuring integration between two PeopleSoft systems, one on PeopleTools 8.53+ (8.53 or 8.54), and another on a lower PeopleTools release (8.52, 8.51, 8.50, etc. down to 8.40), after having set up in both systems the LOCAL gateway URL to point to the URL of the higher PeopleTools release of the two, that is, to the 8.53 or 8.54 system's gateway, the Ping Node works for the higher release node, but fails for the lower release based node, though the errors may vary:
