Purpose

To clarify frequently asked questions about PeopleSoft Update Manager (PUM) and Images.

What is an Image?

PeopleSoft Update Images (PI) are fully functioning instances of the PeopleSoft environment made up of PeopleSoft deployment packages (DPKs). They can be deployed using Oracle VM VirtualBox to host the PeopleSoft (DPKS). Alternatively, you can install and configure PeopleSoft environments on Microsoft Windows or Linux hardware or virtualization platforms using the DPKs. The DPKs that are deployed using Oracle VM VirtualBox are referred to as "VirtualBox DPK," and those that are deployed directly onto Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems are referred to as "Native OS DPK."

There are different types of Images:

PeopleSoft PUM Image (PI): Used for patching and updating as in application maintenance.  With PUM-Enabled applications, PeopleSoft updates are delivered in a PI.  The images are released on a published schedule.  There is one image per database instance for 9.2 applications:   HCM, ELM, CRM, Fin/SCM, Campus Solutions, PeopleTools, and Interaction Hub. Example of our naming convention is:  PeopleSoft Image HCM 9.2.005 would be the 5th image delivered for the HCM 9.2 release.

Upgrade Image (Upgrade Source Image):  An Upgrade Source can be used to upgrade from an older release of PeopleSoft applications to 9.2.  These images do not include required-for-upgrade updates or upgrade scripts.

For use in an upgrade, you may need to apply additional required-for-upgrade updates (from the PI) to the Upgrade Source Image.

Do not use the Upgrade Source Image for patching updates since it will not be as up to date as the PI.  A new Upgrade Source Image is delivered (posted on MOS) when it is certified by PeopleSoft and only when a new upgrade is made generally available. The Upgrade Source Image releases are less frequent than the PIs.

UPDATE: Beginning with the release of the HCM and FSCM PUM #6 images, the PUM images will be called UPDATE images, and will be combined with the DEMO image contents. Separate DEMO and PUM images are not available.   This is being done to simplify use of Images, so that only a single image needs to be downloaded and setup.  The UPDATE IMAGE will contain updates and fixes  through a specific date, plus Demo data.
